 One organization that provides leadership in the discipline of business valuation is the American Society of Appraisers, a multidisciplinary appraisal society conferring professional certification in several fields , including real estate appraisal. It has nearly a thousand members cer- tified in business valuation / Business Appraisal and has several thousand members certified in one or more aspects of real estate appraisal. In addition, in the field of real estate appraisal, the Appraisal Institute offers an extensive array of data sources, publications, continuing education offer- ings, and programs leading to professional designations—including MAI (Member of the Appraisal Institute).

Real estate appraisal theory and practice have been authoritatively published and taught widely for decades. For example, the first edition of The Appraisal of Real Estate was published in 1951. In contrast, much of the organized development of closely held business valuation / Business Appraisal theory and practice has taken place since 1980 and has been spearheaded by the business valuation Committee of the American Society of Appraisers.

The development of the business valuation / Business Appraisal discipline has drawn heavily on the theory and practice of applied microeconomics and in particular the subdisciplines of corporate finance and security analysis. The use of the theory and knowledge of corporate finance and security analysis is eminently reasonable since the umbrella discipline of micro- economics covers the financing function, the investment function, and the dividend function of all kinds of business entities. This is true, regardless of whether the business entities happen to be corporations, partnerships, or sole proprietorships. The basic thrust of security analysis is the appraisal of an interest in an operating entity.

The discipline of security analysis, therefore, is a specialized variation of business valuation / Business Appraisal. The business valuation / Business Appraisal discipline combines the relevant elements of these fields of expertise with the requisite understanding of macroeco- nomics, business management, and accounting.

The business valuation / Business Appraisal employs a process that incorporates and focuses the considerations necessary to estimate the value of an operating entity within the economic and industry environment prevalent at any given time.
